In the article, the authors present the cornerstones of Epicurean atomistic theory, considering the dialectical contexts in which its various aspects were outlined and in which different solutions were adopted to resolve the critical issues highlighted by Epicurus’ rivals. On the basis of this analysis, they propose an interpretation of Epicurean Atomism as an embryonal functionalist doctrine of supervenience, based on the principle of the multiple realisability of matter.

Abstract

In the article, the authors present the cornerstones of Epicurean atomistic theory, considering the dialectical contexts in which its various aspects were outlined and in which different solutions were adopted to resolve the critical issues highlighted by Epicurus’ rivals. On the basis of this analysis, they propose an interpretation of Epicurean Atomism as an embryonal functionalist doctrine of supervenience, based on the principle of the multiple realisability of matter.
